Natural Selection A Social Science student was intrigued about an article he read about some University that was preparing a "Time Capsule" as a project for a commemorative event. The personalities that were selected represented a wide range of cultural, artistic and social endeavours. He was especially interested in the Music category as he himself was a musician. This list categorized a break-down of noted artists such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Directly under these renowned Jazz performers was the name Kenny G. He thought there must be some mistake to list Kenny G at all with these pioneers. He couldn't believe that Mr. G would be among these giants and wrote to the University for an explanation. He received a reply that more or less offered some rationale to this list and that Mr G was actually in a separate category with others of his "talents". Yes the Jazz artists mentioned were selected as to their enormous musical abilities and contributions to the world of modern music. However, they were stuck with other categories that represented the power of marketing and subsequent exposure of these "contributors". Kenny G was listed in a separate category of "Believe it or Not" (social phenomenas) along with Tiny Tim. Garunda Kachinamagali (the inventor), and the "soloists" of the vuvuzela were given a mention for their artistic skills and enormous world-wide acceptance. These "special" selections also included the Spice Girls. Hmm? This brings to mind... "What is the voice of song, when the world lacks the ear of taste?" It's a strange world we live in.
