Wedding Story

There used to be a lot of wedding work in Toronto but this gradually disappeared with the emergence of disc jockeys.

However this particular gig took place some years ago. It must have been a big bash as the patron had both a big band (12 piece group) and a string quartet hired for the wedding event. The quartet was in one room and the big band was in the main Ball Room.

The music stands and mikes were set up that afternoon before the designated starting time. However, the scheduling that the mother of the bride organized didn't come about as planned. The guests had come early, were eating for some time now, and they expected some background music.

This evening by chance, the drummer happened to come early to check things out. He had already set up that afternoon.  He sat down behind the set of drums and made last minute adjustments to the equipment.

The mother of the bride was in a panic because the rest of the band wasn’t there, even though there was about 25 minutes at least to the starting time and contractually no one was late.

She didn't understand the situation and all she wanted was music. After all she paid a big buck for the festivities.  She confronted the drummer and said, “We need some music right now for my guests. Would you please start playing?”

The drummer was a good-natured fellow, (at least he was amiable that evening) and was willing to accommodate the distraught mother of the bride. He picked up his brushes and started swirling for the next while when another musician appeared in the wings (a trumpet player).

The trumpet player said to the drummer, " What are you doing?" "I'm playing, can't you see." The horn player responded, "Well, tell me what and why are you playing?" "The mother of the bride wanted "Stardust" and she wanted it right now."
